For estate properties, a fence isn’t just a boundary — it’s part of the architecture. Split rail fencing fits this landscape — open, historic, and built to follow terrain rather than fight it. We install these fencing systems throughout Chester County, Delaware County, Northern Delaware, and Cecil County.
Built for Uneven Terrain: The Engineering Behind the Aesthetic
The rolling, effortless look of split-rail fencing is harder to achieve than it appears — especially on uneven ground. Unlike rigid panel fencing, split rail systems are designed to flow with the natural topography of your property. Across our service area—from the rolling hills of Chadds Ford to the wooded lots of Landenberg—ground levels are rarely perfectly flat. If installed incorrectly, the result is awkward, stair-stepped gaps that ruin the aesthetic. We custom-cut and align the rails on-site to follow your land’s contour.
Even decorative fences take a beating from Pennsylvania winters. We set our structural posts at depths determined by the local frost line (typically around 36 inches), ensuring your fence remains anchored and level through the freeze-thaw cycle, preventing the leaning posts that often plague poorly installed rail fences.

Premium Split Rail Fencing: Materials & Configurations

2-Rail Split Fence
We offer three configurations:

2-Rail Split Fence
The most open and decorative design. It provides a clear boundary definition without obstructing views, making it ideal for front yards, driveway lining, and subtle property demarcation.

3-Rail Split Fence
The traditional standard for estate fencing. It offers a stronger visual presence and is often used for larger residential lots, providing a more substantial boundary while maintaining the rustic, open feel.

Wire Mesh Integration
For homeowners who love the rustic look of split rail but need to contain pets or deter wildlife, we install heavy-duty welded wire mesh to the inside of the rails. From the street, it reads as open split rail. Up close, it contains dogs and deters wildlife.
Choose Your Material
Premium Cedar
The authentic choice for split rail fencing. Cedar offers natural resistance to moisture, rot, and insect damage without chemical pressure-treating. It weathers to a clean silver-gray over time — the look most estate and historic property owners are after.
USA-Assembled Vinyl
For a maintenance-free option, our USA-assembled vinyl split rail matches the look of painted wood without the upkeep — no rot, no splinters, no repainting.

PA, DE, and MD Fence Codes: Navigating HOA Rules and Property Lines
What’s permitted on a rural Landenberg lot may require HOA or historic district approval in Garnet Valley. We review all township, HOA, and municipal requirements during your estimate — and confirm your layout and materials are compliant before a single post goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions about Split Rail Fence Installation
What is the difference between a split rail fence and a ranch fence?
While both are open-boundary styles, split-rail fences use rough-hewn, natural-looking logs (or vinyl molded to resemble them) that fit into slotted posts, creating a rustic, historic aesthetic. Ranch fences typically use smooth, dimensional lumber (such as 1×6 boards) nailed to the face of the posts, creating a more uniform, utilitarian look often used on agricultural properties.
Will a split rail fence keep my dog in the yard?
A standard open split-rail fence will not contain pets. However, we frequently install heavy-duty welded wire mesh along the inside of the rails. This creates a secure barrier for dogs while maintaining the fence’s rustic, open look from the outside.
How long does a cedar split-rail fence last?
Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects. With proper installation and drainage, expect 20+ years of service.
Can you install split rail fencing on steep hills?
Yes. Unlike rigid pre-fabricated panels, split rail is highly adaptable to slope. Our crews set each post and cut each rail to your grade on-site, so the line flows rather than stair-steps.
What does split rail fencing cost in PA, DE, and MD?
Pricing depends on material (cedar vs. vinyl), rail configuration (2-rail, 3-rail, or wire mesh), and linear footage. Cedar typically runs 15–25per linear foot installed; vinyl runs 25–35 per linear foot. We provide exact pricing during your free on-site estimate.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing is available — ask when you book your estimate.
